Writing Articles That Entice Your Audience

“I was working on the proof of one of my poems all the morning, and took out a comma. In the afternoon I put it back again.” Oscar Wilde. Good writing doesn’t always come easy.

As a business person who provides good-quality, well-written content for your readers, you always focus on a handful of important principles when it comes to satisfying others. One of the main things that you need to keep in mind is that your content offers a solution to the readers’ problems. Another important point upon which to focus is to make sure that the information that you communicate is informative and useful.

Whatever your niche is, your readers all want the same thing from you when it comes to content; they want to read articles that are so interesting and helpful, as well as compelling, that they will want to try to do whatever is suggested in the article to improve their own situation.

There are several ways in which you can determine exactly what your readers are looking for and what they need. The following tips will help you in that regard:

  • Keyword search: Aside from doing a keyword search for the purpose of pleasing the search engines, there is another very important reason to do the search. Keyword searches also produce results that are extremely useful to your readers. Those results will help you to understand what your readers want and need from you.

  • Figure out what people are asking for when they visit your website: Your website analytics program (whether it is Google Analytics or some other program) will be able to help you to understand which search terms people are using when they come to your website. Many times, you will find the search terms enlightening. You will see that many visitors are arriving at your website with very specific ideas in mind and not in a random fashion. There is also value for your business if your website visitors come looking for something and don’t find it but ask you if you are able to provide it. This will allow you to expand and grow your business when you include new things that have not been a part of your repertoire up to that point. You should also strongly consider writing articles on topics that come from your readers’ searches of your website.

  • Repeat questions: As you advance in your business, it is very easy to forget the elementary principles and questions that were posed to you when you first went into business. You should keep your eye on questions that seem to come up frequently. If a few people are asking the same questions, there are most likely other people who are wondering the same thing. You should also pay attention to questions that are probing and that make you go deeper in your research in order to come up with a more comprehensive answer. Those are the kinds of questions that generate discussions and subsequently create more and more content.

  • Readers’ comments on your blog: You should examine the comments on your blog from your readers for points of confusion. You should try to respond to those areas with an article that explains the answer at length. Your readers will appreciate it and they will learn from what you have to say and will want to read more.

  • Challenges in your niche: You are sure to have come across some situations in your niche that were challenging and perhaps puzzling. As a subject matter expert, your first obligation is to find a solution to those challenges. One of the best ways to continue to build the relationships with your readers is to involve them by including them when you communicate the solution. People will appreciate the idea that they are benefitting from your experience and that you have spared them having to get to the answer the hard way.

  • The appropriate writing style: Beside all of the other points upon which to focus, the actual writing style is, of course, of the utmost importance also. The writing style should be simple and direct. It should not be too long and the article should get to the point relatively quickly. The readers won’t have the patience to read and read until they come upon the information that they need if it takes more than a few seconds. That is not a matter of intelligence. It is a matter of lack of time in their schedules. Another extremely valuable thing to do to make your article more effective and of higher quality is to walk away from it for a little while. When you return to it, you will see that your perspective will have changes slightly and you will be able to add more to the writing to improve it even more.

Conclusion

Writing enticing articles on a consistent and regular basis is the foundation of your high-quality business reputation online. It is very important to give your readers what they want and need and to communicate clearly to them that you are constantly striving to find solutions to their problems.

Does it ever come easy? Like anything … the more you do it, the easier it gets. But I don't know if it gets better.

By the way, "a poem," I'm impressed – and envious.

I agree with Lee, the headline needs to draw you into the article and then the first few sentences need to keep your interest. Plus throughout the article there should be key words and phrases so those of us who skim articles can get to the points the writer is trying to make.
