Undoubtedly, your business’s website has been in existence for a long time. Hopefully, you understand clearly that you can’t just have it built (or build it yourself) and then just let it be. If you want it to continue to give back, you must work on it regularly.

As you are taking a good, long, hard look at your website, it will be tremendously helpful if you understand what not to do as well as what to do. Sometimes, a person can inadvertently make mistakes with his or her website without meaning to and without understanding what the repercussions might be in that case. Of course, some of the mistakes that you might make will be minor errors and the consequences will not be great. However, some of the mistakes that you make may be much more serious and the consequences will be much greater and much more extreme. The point here is that if you are able to identify mistakes on your website before you actually make any, you can avoid those issues. Forewarned is definitely forearmed!
What not to do with your website to ensure success and extreme value

Never focus on yourself: Your website must fundamentally answer one question: Can you solve the other person’s problem? If you can, you will be well on your way to building a meaningful and lasting relationship with that person and you will have a great shot at turning that person into a loyal customer eventually.

Don’t purchase any Email lists: That is an extremely easy way to be considered a spammer and to sink very fast. You should come by your online contacts and their phone numbers, Email addresses, etc, honestly, just like everyone else. There are no shortcuts.

Don’t ramble: Your content should be clear, concise, and to the point every time. If you have long-winded passages, you will lose your readers and they will not return to you. The good news is that you have the ability to hold onto them because you have the ability to write and post wonderful content. You just need to follow the rules.

Never ignore the potential of content for mobile devices for your business: Everyone is using a mobile device of some kind nowadays (or, at least, the vast majority of people). You must understand its potential impact on your business and plunge ahead. It is essential to your success.

Never underestimate the importance of an editor for your content: The truth is that an editor is a necessity, not a luxury. It is extremely important that you understand and remember that concept at all times. You may be the most amazing writer in the universe but you still shouldn’t edit your own writing. Nobody should. The reason for that is simple. You know what it is supposed to say, which means that you automatically have an inability to see the errors. All content contains errors. If possible, use a professional editor for all of your content. It is a decision that you will certainly not regret.

Keep your homepage simple and clear: Nobody (you included) likes or needs clutter. That goes for your home and that goes for your website. When it comes to your business, your reputation, and your website, less truly is more. You want to grab people’s attention but you want to do it in an unobtrusive, understated, classy manner. You will be met with positive results if you use that approach.

Never underestimate the importance of SEO: No matter what anyone says, search engine optimization is still critical to the success of your business. You need to make sure that you optimize your content to the best of your ability so that other people notice who you are, what you offer, and what you can do for them.

Go easy on the plugins: This goes back to the clutter concept. Your website should be extremely user-friendly and effective. Don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be. Everyone will thank you for it.

Make sure that your social media campaign is run by a person who knows what to do: The bottom line is that this is your company and the decisions that are made to contribute to your business’s success should be yours. That is the only way that things will be done right. Of course, if you happen to be working with someone whom you trust implicitly and that person has a wealth of experience, you should ask for that person’s help.

Keep an eye on your domain registration: This one is very important. Make sure that you have access to your domain password. Definitely don’t share it with other people but it is important that you know where it is. Many people find themselves in a situation where their domain is being held hostage and the captor will not give up the password. That is wrong on so many levels. It is your business and you own everything in it, including all of the passwords.

On thing I would stress is make one person responsible for decisions, Website design by committee is an awful mistake. I remind my clients of this parable: “One day God wanted to make a horse, so he gathered a committee of angels and told them: ‘Make me a horse!’. That’s how we wound up with the camel.”
Good point about SEO. Often SEO is an after-thought with all the competing needs during the initial design and development. Add to that many developers no little about SEO or have any incentive to learn.
Unfortunately a good deal of SEO is part of the DNA of a Website and should be an integral part of the initial development and planning. SEO needs to be seen as an controlling factor in development, not something you slap on after the fact.
Besides, what good is a cool site if no one sees it?
Re-doing you site? Now’s the them to tame the SEO beast!

One thing that I’ve encountered is upgrading a CMS site to one of a different architecture. Going from PHPNuke to Drupal or WordPress looks challenging at first. The databases are todally different, the objects have different formats (dates, etc.), table names are different, and on and on.
Thankfully, a data warehouse/data mining tool can greatly simplify and assist with this process. These are ETL or Extract, Transform and Load tools. They extract data from one database, convert or transform it to the new format and insert the new data into the new database.
I used Expressor for my last migration and I have also used Pentaho’s Kettle. Today I would look at Talend. The beauty is these utilities will do entire tables at one time even if one table has 8 columns of data and the other, after conversion, has 11, these products can handle it pretty effeciently and, insure that the data is correct once completed.
You connect to the two databases and define the structures. The Transform part is usually the most difficult as you need to go column by column, multiple columns to multiple or single column, or single column to multiple columns and define each transform operation. The good thing is you only have to do this once but, it must be right before you insert data to the new database or you’ll have to drop tables and start all over.
Once configured, run it. It usually only takes a few minutes. Your new CMS system now contains all of the old articles or other content. Don’t lose your old content. Retain it as you move forward.

I think another key thing is to make the navigation headers true to the content. Too often I see ‘fancy’ words or vague phrases that don’t refer to the content – and then the reader feels frustrated, or worse, cheated.

This was a good article. I do think that every company needs to tweak, update or redesign their website after a while. It is like the brick and mortar businesses like Mcdonalds or Taco Bell restaurants. They have redone their looks. How many times have you gone to a place and said, “wow, they look old”.
This is the same with a website. Content and design is always important to a customer. Another reason to look over a website is because of mistakes. Mistakes can happen in the beginning when you first put up your website. The interesting thing is because a website owner doesn’t look at their website from a customer’s point of view so can miss things that needs correcting.

Website building and improvement is a continuous process and in my opinion should be focussed upon regularly amongst other chores, simply because keeping it updated is important with the latest news on improvement , achievements, changes which are regular in any business large or small !!
The over all design approach could be constant to enable the websites target traffic to familiarize themselves , unless of course an internal call or need within the business requires mandatory shift in approach e.g Merger / Acquisition, Change of guard etc.
