How to Blog for Business While You Are Away?
You have a rigorous and consistent blog schedule for your business. What happens to your blog when you are on vacation, attending a business-related conference, or visiting clients? There are ways to still make it work.
There are some blogging platforms that have built-in tools that allow you to blog while away relatively easily. In fact, some will allow you Email your blog posts in. They will give you a secret Email address to use and you will Email your blog post to your blog and it will automatically be posted for you. The only thing that you won’t have control over in that situation is the formatting.
The following are some ways to effectively blog while you are out of the office:
Build up a queue
Having a queue for your articles with publication dates that are set in advance is a good idea in general. It also works especially well when you are going to be out of the office for any amount of time longer than a day or two. You might want to consider writing a few blog posts that are part of a series of blogs that you are publishing in consecutive order. If you decide to do that, remember to leave the readers with a cliffhanger at the end of all of the articles except for the last one. The readers will want to keep tuning in.
Use guest bloggers
Another good way to ensure that you have enough high-quality blog articles for when you are out of the office is to solicit articles from guest bloggers. Guest bloggers often bring a new and refreshing perspective to your blog and people will find that interesting. However, make sure that you don’t use guest bloggers very often. You still want the majority of the articles that you post to be your original articles because that is one of the main ways that you brand your business—through your content.
Repurpose old blogs
If you have been an extremely prolific blog writer and have been writing blog articles for a long time, you may want to pull some of your oldest blogs, update them with whichever information is necessary and appropriate, and repost them. In going over your old blog posts, you may find some things that are either no longer applicable or that no longer fit how you approach your business any longer. Businesses and the people who own them are evolving constantly. The way you looked at things two years ago may not be the way that you look at things today. Of course, you need to be careful if the topics of the old blogs that you are considering are specific for a certain time period. In any case, there is a definite possibility that you have some valuable blog material that you can use.
Stick to your regular blog schedule
Whichever schedule you usually follow when it comes to writing your blog articles, you should try to follow the same schedule while you are away. If your day starts earlier while you are away, it would probably be beneficial to get up a little earlier than you normally would so that you get the writing out of the way and don’t have to worry about it.
Video blog postings
Creating a video blog while you are out of the office is a great idea. This type of posting is easily accomplished from basically anywhere. Your video should be relatively short (no more than two or three minutes) because people will be inclined to pay more attention to it and to watch it to the end if it isn’t too long. If your time out of the office is at a conference, you can conduct some brief interviews with key people at the conference. If you video several interviews, you can turn them into several different blog postings, which you can post on different days. If you are on vacation, you can make a video of people and places on your trip, as long as it ties in somehow to your business and the theme of your blogs.
A friend whom you trust
You may want to consider asking a trusted friend to babysit your blog while you are away. He or she would be there just to make sure that nothing goes wrong while you are away. If, by chance, something does go wrong, your friend can hopefully fix it immediately, before it turns into a giant problem.
Conclusion
Blogging for business is extremely important and just because you have to be out of the office sometimes doesn't mean that you can't continue to blog in your regular and consistent manner. With the sophistication of technology today, there really are no limitations when it comes to conducting business as usual. Communication continues wherever you are and you continue to build more and more relationships and interact with people who are excited about what you are offering.

If your blog is important to your business it's simple, take your computer on your vacation or business trip and just do it. This shouldn't even be a factor, if it's important just do it!

Terrence,
If you travelling in the Amazon jungle or trekking on a camel in the Sahara desert, a laptop will not help you.

These are great tips! My favorite thing to do when I go on vacation is to get a bunch of posts lined up and schedule them to post at the regular times. That way my audience doesn't miss out on anything and I don't have to break from my time off.

If you are in some remote spot, write your blog entries beforehand and have someone else post them on the appropriate date. Some of the most successful blogs are not written and posted in real time.

Terrence,
This is exactly what is said in the article. Why do I have a feeling that you rushed to comemnt without reading the entire article.
Good tips. I usually do post them ahead of time. I like the idea of repurposing old posts. It is a good way to get a post done quickly. some of the blogs I follow do a vlog post while they are on vacation. Their topic is usually different from their regular topics. They make the blogger seem human and interesting. Of course if you are in the Amazon jungle you will have to post it when you get back. At least you will have one done for your first week home.

I usually have the content ready to go and ask someone at my home office to post on a specific day unless there is a timely issue I want to address. I do wish there was a feature that allowed you to schedule blog posts to be posted ahead of time (like there is for email marketing). I use blogger…does this scheduling feature exist in any other blogging software?

Jacqueline,
That feature is standard with WordPress together with the ability to email a blog article to be posted.
The last time I went on vacation, I put a note on Facebook that I needed a Guest Post, and one of my friends complied. I was very grateful.
Re: the suggestion to take along a laptop, I can't imagine going anywhere without mine, but I haven't yet planned a safari or deep sea fishing trip.
🙂
Fortunately, some of my vacations give me the free time to write blog posts, and I think re-working old blog posts is a great idea for those "times-away."

WordPress.org has a calendar app that lets you plan, outline and write your blog entries as far ahead as you like, then posts them automatically.

When I know I am going to be out of town for a week or two I write a series of generic posts ahead of time and save them on my server site. Even if I am out of the country I can usually find an Internet cafe, log on to the site and post from where ever I am. As Terrance says, many posts are not written in real time.

Taking a few days or a week off from blogging is probably not the end of the world. It might help you get refreshed to come up with more valuable content. To me blogging is not a strict requirement that must be met each day.

If you have a WordPress blog (and I would recommend it, even if it's attached to your business website – just skin it so it has the same look and feel), it's simple. As Roger says, write some generic posts in advance – but don't save them to your server. Schedule them within WordPress to publish on specific dates.

Blog tools like WordPress are ideal for scheduling! Even if you are not 'away', its extremely helpful to at least have content for your blog planned 1 week out and post it as unpublished and scheduled for delivery. Same for Twitter. Setup those updates to go out while you are away or 'sleeping.'
