Getting Back to Basics With Social Media

keyboard-coffee-writing

Social media has been around in one form or another for a very long time. The advances in technology are astounding at times and seem complicated. It’s time to get back to basics.

Nowadays, people have all sorts of ways of communicating with each other. The one thing that is for sure is that most people couldn’t possibly live without communicating without social media at this point. With that in mind, it is a good idea to think about the simple facts that are a part of social media. It is easy to lose sight of those with all of the advances that have been made and that are being introduced to the public in a rapid-fire fashion.

Participation

The motivation for people to have gotten involved in communicating through social media initially was that they found it to be a quick and easy way to stay in touch with friends and relatives. It was also an effective way to network with others and there seemed to be mutually beneficial relationships that were formed as a result of social media interactions. Your interactions should be consistent and you should constantly strive to come up with stimulating and educational conversations.

Branding

Social media is an excellent vehicle for allowing people to get to know your brand and business offerings. It let you give other people the opportunity to get to really know what your business is all about and how much capability you have of solving the customers’ issues. There is no other existing way to get your message across so easily, quickly, and widely.

The root of social media

Social media is successful only if you are able to

· Speak with your customers

· Listen to your customers

· Support your customers in their decisions

· Successfully encourage your customers to spread the word about your business

· Take the advice of your customers when it comes to innovative, new ideas for your business

Show creativity

At the core of social media are the values and ethics that appeal to people on an emotional level. When people’s emotions are touched, they respond. With that said, it is important to remember that not all business approaches through social media should be the same. Your approach must fit your target audience and their needs and wants.

Creating a buzz

The more buzz (attention) you cause around your brand and your offerings, the more you will ultimately sell. Buzz is a critical element when it comes to success in business. Your business is undoubtedly a word-of-mouth business, which means that the more people who know about what you do and what you can do for them, the more they will be willing to tell other people about it.

A quiet approach

Absolutely nobody wants to feel that they are being hit over the head with information about your business and what you can sell to them. If you come at them like a bull in a china shop, the chances are great that you will never have another opportunity to come at them in any manner after that. Because you are only allowed one shot, you need to make sure that it is a really effective one. Your approach should be friendly and relaxed and you should always make them feel that you are there for two reasons: 1) to get to know them as people as well as to acquire an understanding of what they need and want and 2) to solve whichever issues they are experiencing at the time.

Request ratings

As frightening the prospect of asking to be graded for your products and services is, it is extremely important and it will help you to improve tremendously on what you have. This is very easily done with social media as your vehicle. At the same time, it will facilitate the building of the relationships with others upon which your success is dependent. So, bit the bullet and ask for your report card.

Share ideas

Social media makes it very easy to exchange ideas on many different topics. It is very important to include everyone in the forums, not just people of a certain level.

The importance of metrics

The only true way to determine if you are succeeding is by using some form of analytics. Without them, you are just guessing. There are many different possible metrics that you can gather. You need to examine what is available and figure out which ones apply most appropriately to your particular business.

Conclusion

Social media has come a tremendous distance since it was first introduced. The new technology is extremely important and innovative. However, it is also very important not to lose sight of the basics. A clear understanding of the basic concepts of social media should always be kept in mind. Social media is of great benefit to people on a universal level. Part of the tremendous appeal is the fact that a person and establish a relationship with anyone they want in any place around the world.

An additional basic….don't write anything on social media that would not want to read in the newspaper.
