Quaternions in Modern Physics

This blog refers to an internet piece, “Physics Forums”, under : “Mendel Sachs Unification”. It is said: “His program of reinterpreting spacetime geometry in terms of spinors is important, and I believe was probably initiated by Penrose”.
This is false. My studies of the role of spinors in physics and my publications on this subject precede those of Penrose. Read More »

On Extra-Terrestrial Life

The universe is comprised of many billions of galaxies. Each galaxy is comprised of many billions of stars. Thus there must be many millions of planets in the universe, bound to some of these stars, as the Earth is to the Sun, that are capable lo sustaining life. Read More »

On the Beginning of the Universe

What is time? What is meant by “Beginning”? The first Hebrew word of the Bible is: “beraisheet”. It means, literally, in the beginning. The first Hebrew letter of this word is ‘bet’. It looks like a ‘u’ on its side with a dot in the middle. Kabbalah (Jewish philosophy) says that this dot represents the singular beginning of the material universe. Read More »

On Bigotry in Science

In Wikepedia: Reference Desk Archives/Science/2009, it is said that “Mendel Sachs did not in fact complete Albert Einstein’s unified field theory – because we should have heard more about this physicist! Based on this argument, it was then said: “it seems safe to say that the claims are not validated by all accounts – Lomn (30/9/09). It is said further that “if anyone really thought he had come up with a unified field theory that worked, there would be discussion of it. Sounds a bit crankish to me”. In actual fact, anyone who rejects a technically rigorous theory without any rigor, but based on such statements as above, is the real crank! Read More »

On Science and Religion

There has been much discussion, over the ages, on the possible interaction of the bases of science and religion. It has been my proposition that such interaction is illusory, primarily because the logics of these two disciplines are out of context. That is to say, religious truth and scientific truth have different meanings. Read More »

On Understanding Everything

Will research in theoretical particle physics come to an end with the anticipated discovery of the Higgs particle? The CERN supercollider and the Fermilab Tevatron experiments are currently pursuing the existence of this particle that its adherents claim will fulfill the requirements of the Standard Model and end all future search for understanding of matter and the entire universe! Does Quantum Mechanics Explain Atomic Matter?

There is no doubt that quantum mechanics has been eminently successful in describing the atomic domain of matter, especially in the nonrelativistic region. But does it explain this matter in terms of underlying principles? Read More »

What is Relative in the Theory of Relativity?

One of my main research interests in theoretical physics is the theory of relativity – its physical implications and its philosophy. I have been continuously frustrated when the so-called “experts” on this subject promote false ideas to their students and to the public on what this theory is about! For example, I recently heard a TV interview with one of the “experts” who was asked: “What is the theory of relativity all about? He replied: “It is the idea that everything is relative” Nothing could be further from the truth! Read More »

The Higgs Particle: The Emperor’s New Clothes

There is a great deal of interest today on a search for the Higgs particle. Major (multi-million dollar) experimentation is underway at CERN’s large supercollider (LHC) and at Fermilab on the search for this particle. It is defined in the context of the “Standard Model” of elementary particle physics. The Higgs model  is claimed to explain how the mass of matter is generated, how the Big Bang became the Universe we live in and how atoms congeal into matter. (S. Fried, “The Race for the Secret of the Universe”, PARADE, July 26, 2009). Read More »

Teaching Physics

From many years of experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate physics, I believe that I have learned that the most effective way to teach concepts is the dialogue method. It is is far superior to lecturing. It was used, for example, by Plato in his Athens Academy, thousands of years ago and in the 16th century by Galileo. Read More »
